2015 Monterey Hickory Classic Winners
Gary Yoro (gross) - Kris Surano (Champion)

Friday Sept 11th, 2015 - Monterey,
A record breaking heatwave for the Monterey Peninsula didn't phase Diablo CC's Kris Surano en route to shooting a 9 under par 63 and running away with the championship. The round included a slew of birdies and a chip-in eagle 3 on the par5 13th.

In the gross division, things were a little closer. The title came down to the final holes with first time hickory player Gary Yoro from Spring Hills GC and Orion Galioni of Pacific Grove eventually tied at 78. Gary played the final 10 holes 1 over par getting things kicked off with an eagle 3 on the par5 9th. Orion played a steady round with 13 pars and the unfortunate out-of-bounds on the 13th. Both names will be added to our perpetual trophy.

A cardoff was also needed to determine our runner-up with 3 players tied at 2 under par 70. Mike Kosich's back nine was slightly better than Dana Niehaus and Orion Galioni.

In our Skins game, thanks to Stacy Brown and Orion Galioni's diligent and careful efforts, we have zero errors to report.

We had 2 gross eagles, 4 net eagles, a slew of birdies, and even a gross par that won a skin.

Some stellar play that canceled out skins:
Dan Vordale and Jim Hanson both birdied (net eagled) the extremely difficult par 3 6th.
Mike Kosich and Steve Henneuse birdied (net eagled) the par 4 16th.
Mike Kosich and Jim Thompson birdied the par 5 13th (net eagled) to steal a skin from Kris Surano.

A big thanks to Neil Allen and staff @ Del Monte. We look forward to next year.

We had a few first time players: Jeannine Niehaus, Tim Bell, Jim Hanson, Gary Yoro, and Charles Chapa. Thanks for participating and hope to see you again!

A nice article by the NCGA that appeared in their e-magazine celebrating last year's event:

From the course's website
Opened in 1897, Del Monte Golf Course is the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi. Designed by golf and polo enthusiast Charles Maud, this inland course boasts a meandering layout that has challenged golfers for more than a century. It was the original host of the California State Amateur and continues to serve as one of three courses on which the Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational is played.

Putting on a very early Del Monte green.

Food/Drink
The course has a wonderful cafe and bar that serves lunch for those that might want to get to the course a bit early. Festivities typically overflow post event to a local restaurant/pub for the NorCal group... to be determined.

There is no driving range at Del Monte.

Course is extremely easy to walk, flat, with tees only a few steps away from previous green as would be expected from a course over 100 years old. The course routing does not return to clubhouse till 18th hole.

The par 5's are very short from the red tees, especially #1 & #13. :) Are gross skins going to be separated by the tee you play?

Probably not. In the past Stacy for instance has won gross skins (#13 at Sharp Park) from a different set of tees. Guess that's just part of the perks of being a Senior. :)

Not many spots remaining. If you're interested in playing, please sign up soon.

Food/Drinks

A small family-run Mexican restaurant (taqueria) named Pico de Gallo has been suggested for a post round get together. The restaurant may be a little tight, but we should be able to cram in there. This is pay-at-the-counter service, which makes things easy for a larger group.

We have 3 tee times reserved at Pacific Grove for an extra casual fun day on Saturday Sept 12th. A little early, otherwise we would have had to wait till after 11:00. So we should be done by noonish and should work out well for those that want to get on the road. Cost is $49 (I think that includes a cart if desired. I'll have to get back on that.)

Saturday Sept 12th Pacific Grove
7:30 - 7:40 - 7:50

Update Sept 6th:
A few new players added to the list to fill in for a few that had to drop out. Handicaps have been updated in first post as well as newsletter that was sent out. Look forward to seeing all soon.

Thursday (Sept 10th), Willy Schlick, wife Susan, and Wolfe, were going to be out at Spring Hills in the afternoon and suggested having a small BBQ, drinks, and a little boccie ball at the Schlick estate (just off the 12th hole). So if you happen to be in the area and want to party with the Schlicks & Wolfe, give us a shout. Golfing around 3pm-ish (prob only 9 holes) with get together around 5pm-ish.
